The Marquee died due to 2 things. It was a rock club, and after 1999 there were no rock bands. Then,.. some bloke in a suit took over the management, and turned to the "Craigs" of the world. Blokes in shirts and trendy shoes got in, and the place turned into a "weekend wankers" paradise. For a nightclub to run, you have to sell tickets 7 nights a week. The Marquee was free to get in towards the end. We all went to the Moritz....If money is the problem,.. then CBGB's will move, then somewhere down the line, some old punk will buy it back and start it all over again. And like the Tower of London, they will have old panels of grafitti, preserved behind glass adorning the walls.....

The Marquee is still alive. Open 7 days a week, in Leicester Square now. Not just rock, although there is a rock night every other Friday. Now it caters for all tastes. Something for everyone wanting to see live entertainment.
It's the way to go, now it's no longer 1989, and we're in the minority. The bands that play suit the kids that pay.
God,.. it sounds like a fucking toilet. Do they have Gay night too?
No, that's at the Astoria, and is very popular by all accounts.
Good.

I think they may be developing into a chain, as there's one where I live in Hertford. Even the logo's the same. I don't know if they have a gay night though.
Maybe you'll get one down in your neck of the woods, Buttz. A Marquee that is, not a gay night...
Sheesh, the snide response to Stacey's minor little joke is going to keep me from signing the petition.
The place is supposed to be a dump? So, what you're saying is that when it was built they said "hey...can somebody come in here before we open the doors and just sling monkey shit all over the place and pee in all the corners to make it stink? And while you're at it, can you wire things kind of shitty like to make it really crappy all about here?". It was not meant to be a dump, but a dump it has become through the ages, or so I am told. I have never been to it, but from those I have spoken to that have made the journey, they made it, and regretted it. Yes, it might be a historical landmark to some, but to others it might be an eyesore. And if it is an eyesore to somebody who doesn't give a shit about it's history, and that person has any connection to government, no amount of petition signings will mean a damn thing. Trust me, I know the construction business very well, and the way States and Cities do things.
But hey, if signing an online petition helps you sleep at night, rock on. But being an asshole to somebody who has existed on this site WAY longer than you only makes other old timers here such as myself say "fuck 'em" and screws up your plans of a Punk Paradise.
Cheers Carl, although my t-shirt comment wasn't really a joke. Thought maybe CBGB had fallen on hard times since the hey-day of Duff sporting the said garment. That free advertising must've sent business through the roof.
Everyone's got their views, sentiments, emotions etc. and I was a little shocked by the response. I think I made my point though. No harm done.
